The 2007 release of Word is an impressive leap from earlier versions. In fact, the Microsoft Office 2007 package is a nearly complete makeover. It's been re-written in XML and uses zip technology to bring the once dimly lit software into the light.

The moment you start the program, you'll see the obvious changes with the introduction of the Ribbon. The Ribbon makes it easy to see and find the commands you want. The Microsoft Office Button (the Orb) at the top left of the screen gives you the basics: New, Open, Save, Print, Recent Documents, and Close. It also includes Prepare, Send, and Publish options that make workflow easy.

Prepare allows you to view and edit document properties. It also provides a simplified way to add digital signatures, encrypt your document, mark collaborative work as final, and run a compatibility check against earlier versions of Word to search for unsupported features.

Send gives you quick options for e-mailing and faxing documents, and Publish allows you to post to Blogs and Document Management Servers.

The Ribbon uses tabs to organize tools and commands by task. Each tab is divided into groups that also follow the workflow process very closely. Forget about drilling down through multiple layers of menus and dialogue boxes. Think about what you want to do, click the tab and read the groups. We've all had the dreaded Hal.dll problem.

You cannot enter Windows because of this error:

Hal.dll is missing or corrupt

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows \ System32 \ Hal.dll

The source of the problem is most often not the DLL but in fact in the BOOT.INI

The solution is simple:

* Start your computer with a boot disk

* Go to the command prompt.

* Enter the following commands:

C:

edit boot.ini

You will then gain access to BOOT.INI. By default it looks like this:

[boot loader]

timeout = 30

default = multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \ WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \ WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" / fastdetect

The error is in the number of the partition that is shown. (It often occurs after the installation of a 2nd operating system). Change partition (1) partition (2). If you do not want to repeat Boot.ini several times, copy the line after [operating systems] and change the number in each, you just have to try different options available to you at the next startup.

Another tip:

* Copy the entire line even after [operating systems] and add after / fastdetect: / safeboot: minimal / sos / bootlog

* Change the name of the option for "safe mode"

You now have an option from the menu that lets you access the Safe Mode without having to keep pressing F8 during the boot sequence.

It may sometimes be the case where hal.dll is the true cause of the problem. If this occurs then what you need to do is replace the file. You can do this by inserting your original Windows CD and replacing the file using the move command. This process is painless and should take less than 5 minutes once booted up.

You can have programs installed that you haven't used in years, bits of programs you uninstalled years ago, documents and other files you have saved since the dawn of the computer age for no apparent reason, your web browsing history, and worst of all, spyware and viruses. The result is that your computer just doesn't seem to run like it used to. It takes a half hour for your computer to start up. You're finding yourself waiting for programs to open. When they finally open, they work slowly and sometimes even crash and weird pop-up windows begin to randomly appear. You've maybe even experience the infamous "Blue Screen Of Death." The diagnosis...your Windows PC is in need of some serious Spring cleaning!

So where should you begin? The first and most important step of the cleanup process is backing up any files you can't afford to lose. Cleaning up your computer is like going in for minor surgery. Most of the time everything goes well, but there's always that random chance that something could go wrong, so you want to take precautions. Backing up your files is typically as simple as burning your My Documents folder to a blank DVD disc. You know which files are important to you. Back them up, and back them up frequently.

Three Blind Services

There are three Windows services that are always running no matter what you do. You can't close them, or if you can, they magically reappear. There is no explanation for them in Task Manager, and information on them

is scant wherever you look. The offenders are Svchost, Ctfmon and Justsched.

So one day I was bored enough to investigate the services to attempt to get to the bottom of them.

Here is what I found.

SVCHost.Exe

I was fiddling with one my machines, as I am wont to do on a regular basis. I was checking out services and exploring which ones could be safely disabled to squeeze a little more out of Windows. It was then that I saw multiple svchost entries clogging up my services window. I had seen these before and tried disabling a few, only to be promptly denied with a sharp beep and a 'denied' window.

It was then I decided enough was enough and decided to find out exactly what svchost is and why I have so many of them.

The logical first stop on my journey of discovery was Microsoft.

"svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries."

Not the clearest of explanations I agree but it did clear up the mystery somewhat. During the life of XP, Microsoft moved from running internal services from .exe files to .dll files. This made the build more modular and meant that different part of the system could all access these .dll files.

It added a little more security too as you can't run a .dll file directly. It has to be in conjunction with an .exe file. The idea was to cut down on system vulnerabilities among other things. To reference all of these .dll's a .exe file was created that could call several at a time.

But why so many of them?

This goes back to vulnerability. If all of the file needed were called from one .exe file, what would happen if that exe crashed? The rest of the system would follow soon after. It was decided that the files needed would be grouped under .exe files in a logical way. For example you have a svchost for the desktop, one for networking, one for firewall etc. Under these will be the myriad of files needed to run each service.

See? Easy.
